About Spirit Feathers:
Bird feathers are sacred to Native American culture, religion and tradition. It is considered a high honor to receive a feather as a gift and embellished feathers are often given as a gift of friendship. When a spirit feather is given as a gift, the person receiving the feather is being given a symbol of honoring a person's respect, love and is a sign of providing gratitude.
Aside from gifts, feathers are used in many different ways by Native American cultures. For decoration and embellishment they are used as hair ornaments or as part of a head band. They can be used as a wall decoration and as a fan. Talking feathers are often used during meetings and only the person holding the feather can talk. Hand picked spirit feathers are often placed on walking sticks, bows and arrows, dream catchers and just about anything else you can think of.
Since feathers have a connection with birds that fly high in the air, there is a great connection between a feather and the Great Spirit. Many Native Americans believe that birds have a special knowledge to communicate with other animals. Therefore, feathers hold a special higher power in communications for humans.

About the Artist:
I have been an artist since I was big enough to hold a crayon. Having grown up along the shores of the Chesapeake among a family that loved nature and the outdoors, it was natural that my artwork followed in those footsteps. As well as painting, I enjoy graphite pencil drawing and photography. My subjects are always those that walk, swim, crawl or fly. I love nature and try to capture the spirit of each animal I draw or paint. Many of my renderings reflect some moment I have experienced that has given me great joy.
My newest endeavor is painting on feathers. If anyone had told me I would be spending my Springtime dissecting turkey tails and wings, they would have gotten “that look”. But here I am painting on feathers, my own small contribution to recycling. And what better way to portray nature than on a piece of nature itself?
I handle each feather from beginning to end, procuring, cleaning and repairing it. They are remarkably fragile, but amazingly resilient. Each feather is used regardless of nicks or flaws. I find perfection in the imperfect. For me they are more interesting and alive with those little “flaws”.
Before painting begins I search for the right feather for the animal. I try to find a pattern in the feather that will match the background and light to be portrayed. Then comes several layers of thin paint as the animal, rocks, fields, water, all the elements take form. My favorite part is rendering the eyes. They are always last for at that point, life and spirit enters into the painting.
As a final homage, I use my intuitive powers to select special stones and extra feathers that will complement the final work and add their power and protection.
May the joy and love I have put into my paintings be passed on to you.
